Why now

A forest is dying while we watch.

The Matemateāonga Range, on our doorstep in eastern Taranaki, is known as a dying forest. Possums strip the canopy, rats and stoats empty the nests, deer and goats eat the fresh new shoots, and pigs root up the forest floor, turning over the life within it. The old trees are not being replaced. Without action, the birdsong that should fill these valleys will keep fading.

We have shown it can be turned around. Where we work, the forest is regrowing and kiwi numbers are rising. Rangatahi are lining up to be part of it. What’s missing is the scale of support to reach the rest of the landscape before it’s too late.

What’s at stakeKiwi, kōkako, bats and the forest that shelters them.
What worksPredator control, planting and Hark to measure every result.
Who’s readyIwi, rangers and young people who want careers in conservation.
