Kiwi recovery

From a handful of pairs to over 100 kiwi.

In 2020 Save the Kiwi mapped a small number of kiwi pairs and single males across this catchment. Since 2022, 60 kiwi have been released here thanks to Taranaki Kiwi Trust and Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust. We have also taken part in Operation Nest Egg, where kiwi eggs are lifted from the wild and hatched in safety, giving more chicks the chance to survive. Today there are over 100 kiwi.

Collected as an egg from land the 800 Trust protects, this chick hatched safely through Operation Nest Egg before returning to the wild.
